Affinity Panel – “The Muslim World In Transition:
Case Study of Turkey & Egypt”
Masses of protestors from Gezi Park and Tahrir Square were calling for justice, freedom and democratic rights for Turkey and Egypt respectively. Egypt’s military has recently overthrown a democratically elected government while in Turkey an elected government is reversing decade long democratic wins under the shadow of massive corruption allegations. Both countries have important elections coming up in 2014.
Can democracy work and mature in Turkey and Egypt?
What are the social, religious and political root causes at the heart of democratic challenges facing two of the most significant Muslim countries in Muslim heartlands?
These and more will be addressed at this lively and timely panel.
