One of the greatest Ibādah which Allāh Ta’āla has blessed this Ummah with, is the recitation of invoking Allah’s blessings on the Prophet (peace be upon him) or Durood, it isn’t just a great act of worship (Ibādah) but also an enjoyable and pleasurable one as well. It is an Ibādah that can be done in the comfort of one’s home. Allāh Ta’ālā has described the lofty status of our beloved Nabi (Prophet) (peace be upon him) in the following words:
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
“We have raised you (Muhammad -peace be upon him-) to a most noble and honourable position”
In regards to the above mentioned verse, when it was revealed, Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) asked the Sahabah Kirām as to its meaning. The companions (pbut) replied that Allāh and his Rasūl (peace be upon him) know best, thereupon Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) explained the Tafsīr of this verse which came directly from Allāh Ta’āla in a Hadith al-Qudsi:
Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri d narrates that Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) said: “Jibraīl (Alaihis Salaam) came to me and asked: “Verily, your Lord has asked: “Do you know how I have elevated your remembrance?” I replied:” Allāh knows best.”
He (Allāh Ta’ālā) said:” Whenever I am remembered, you are remembered with me.”
When Adam (Alaihis Salaam) descended to the world, he wept for forty years (as repentance for having partaken of the forbidden tree). After forty years he sought his Lord’s forgiveness through the medium of Muhammad (peace be upon him) , upon which Almighty Allāh granted him forgiveness immediately. Then Allāh Ta’ālā asked him:” O Adam, who is Muhammad?” How do you know of Muhammad, when I haven’t created him yet?
Adam (Alaihis Salaam) replied:” O my Allāh! When I made Sajdah (prostration) to you in Jannah, I saw the Kalimah written on your Arsh (throne) and I thought to myself that there cannot be anybody greater than the person whose name is attached to your name. Therefore I knew that Muhammad is the closest to you.”
THE GREATEST MISER
Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) said:
“A miser is he who, when my name is mentioned in his presence, he does not send salutations upon me”. (Tirmidhi Shareef).
An interesting anecdote:
A miserly old man used to go daily to the Masjid for Salāh. But when he used to leave for the Isha Salāh, he used to put out the lamp in his house in order to save paraffin-oil.
One night he hurriedly left for Isha forgetting to put out the lantern, he remembered when he was halfway to the Masjid. He was quite disappointed about the loss that he was to incur that day because of the extra paraffin that would be used, so he turned back and rushed home. He knocked on the door and told his wife: “Do not open the door; I just came to remind you to put out the lantern.”
She replied:” Do not worry, I am in your marriage for many years now, I am well trained and I realized that you forgot about it so I did put it out when you left. But you tell me, that the extra walking that you had to do to inform me to put the lantern out, the sole of your shoe must have worn out extra today, what about that?”
He replied:” No my sole did not wear out because at the point where I had to turn back, I removed my shoes and put them under my arm. I will only put my shoes back on when I reach that point again.”
Then she asked:” Why did you tell me not to open the door? He replied: “I did not want the handle of the door to get used unnecessarily as it shall wear out.”
NOW THAT’S A REAL PENNY PINCHER.
This was an example of a miser, who we may laugh at, but more miserly than him is one who hears the name of Rasulullah (peace be upon him) but does not recite DUROOD upon him.
GUARANTEE OF ACCEPTANCE OF DUAS THROUGH DUROOD SHAREEF
Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه said: “A person’s supplications are suspended between the heavens and earth as long as he does not recite Salawāt upon Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) .”
When tears are shed during Dua, it is a sign of acceptance of ones Duas, but it is not every individual’s capability to shed tears whilst making Dua, but anyone can send Salawāt upon our beloved Nabi (peace be upon him) . Therefore, we should make it a practice to recite Durood Shareef in the beginning, in the middle and at the end of our Duas as well, as this guarantees the acceptance of our Duas.
THE SHORTEST DUROOD:
To recite Durood Shareef a hundred times will take 3-4 minutes. We should start by reciting a hundred Duroods every day and increase that amount as we go on. The shortest Duroods are:
صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ
( Swallalāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam)
صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى الَّنَبِيِّ الأُمِّيِّ
( Swallalāhu Alan Nabiyyil Ummiyyi)
HOW TO RECITE DUROOD SHAREEF?
It is better to sit, face the Qiblah and recite Durood Shareef with concentration and love for Rasūlullah (peace be upon him), but even if it is recited whilst we are busy with our daily work and household chores, it will bring us great blessings and rewards in this world and the next.
The main ingredient during the recitation of Salawāt is that we should send Salawāt with complete love for Rasūlullah (peace be upon him) .
May Allāh grant all our readers and each member of the Ummah of our beloved Rasūl i the ability of reciting Salawāt abundantly with love and compassion for our Nabi (peace be upon him) .
