The following are some of the etiquette and duas from the Sunnah associated with going to bed:
- Be in a state of purity:
“If you come to your bed, then perform Wudoo’.” [Bukhari] - Sleep on our right side:
“…. Then lie down on your right side.” [Bukhari] - Place the right hand under the right cheek:
“When he (Allah bless him and grant him peace) went to sleep, he placed his right hand under his right cheek.” [Bukhari]
- Dust the bed:
“When one of you goes to bed, let him dust the bed because he does not know what comes into it before or after him.” [Bukhari]
Recite Surat Al-Kāfirūn, from its benefits:
“It frees the person from Shirk.” [Abu Dawud and others]
Adhkār Before Sleeping
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : من قرأ بالآيتين من آخر سورة البقرة في ليلة كفتاه.
The Messenger of Allāh (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
Ibn al-Qayyim Raḥimahullāh said: “Suffice him for any evil that may harm him.” [Al-Wabil al-Sayyid]
‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I hold the opinion that no sane person can go to sleep before reciting the last three Āyāt of Sūrah al-Baqarah.” [Al Azkar]
‘Ā`ishah (Allah be pleased with her) reported: “The Messenger of Allāh (Allah bless him and grant him peace) would get ready for sleep, he would blow into his hands, recite the two chapters of refuge (Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah an-Nās), and he would wipe his hands over his body.” [Bukhari]
Sleeping in a State of Purification
From Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
﴿من بات طاهرا بات في شعاره ملك لا يستيقظ ساعة من الليل إلا قال الملك: اللهم اغفر لعبدك فلانا، فإنه بات طاهرا.﴾
“Whoever sleeps while in a state of purification then an Angel sleeps in his garment, he does not wake up at any time during the night except that the Angel says: O Allaah forgive Your slave such and such since he went to sleep upon purification.” [Silsilatul ahadith al-Sahiha]
