As the Pakistan protests continue, with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif refusing to step down, one of the main opposition party, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)‘s, chief Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has launched a ‘Go Nawaz Go’ campaign on currency bills.
Addressing the nation on Sunday (14 September), Qadri launched the campaign by scribbling the political slogan on two currency notes of Rs50 and Rs1000, and urged his supporters to follow.
“I ask 180 million people of the country to launch this movement and write go Nawaz go on every single currency note,” said Qadri.
The PAT chief called on his supporters to continue their efforts until the incumbent government’s completely eliminated.
State Bank Condemns Campaign
According to the State Bank officials, scribbling political slogans on currency notes will destroy the value of the note.
Minister of Finance, Ishaq Dar, condemned the campaign, saying: “Scribbling or writing on currency notes is illegal and would render them useless.”
The Azadi (freedom) March began on 14 August, Pakistan’s Independence Day, with a mission for Naya (new) Pakistan, free of corruption.
Cricketer-turned politician and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman, Imran Khan had kick-started the March saying: “The entire Pakistan knows that the general elections were rigged,” before warning the government to verify the voting count or else a Tsunami March will take over Pakistan.
In recent developments, the government arrested several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) protesters yesterday (13 September) for disrupting peace, but released them back today (14 September).
