Kwasi Kwarteng, Conservative MP for Spelthorne & author, talks to Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi about war and gold. He doesn’t necessarily advocate a return to the gold standard, but does state that the only country that could feasibly link its currency to gold would be China and the Yuan. The bigger problem is government spending and paper money — after the credit crunch and crisis, people are suspicious of paper money and want a more objective standard to keep value. And he says austerity is just another name for balancing the books — as has happened previously when governments have overspent in wartime.
