The article “I want out of Generation I ” published in today’s Sydney Morning Herald goes a long way to explaining the twenty first epidemic of the the “i” phenomenon that has created the narcissistic society we now live in.
It’s a must read for all you generation “y” – “Y” as in “Why do I have to take responsibility for anything?” From an Islamic perspective it can be labelled as the “nafs” or ego. Everyone these days is being conditioned to be so wrapped up in themselves, there is not much room for compromise or different of opinion anymore.
We even have the audacity of people disrespectfully challenging the wisdom and knowledge of teachers, Sheikhs, leaders etc. because they can simply throw in the “I think” or “in my humble opinion” at the beginning of a email, post or tweet. Sorry for the sad news, but not everyone is entitled to an opinion, and neither does the whole world need to know about it.
Although I see many positive things to come from the up and coming generation, I see a lack of proper Islamic adab (sense of propriety) and knowledge as a major hindrance to the enduring success of their activities.
The successful ones will be those that have true taqwa and knowledge of the deen – this is the natural law of Allah. Alhamdulillah there are many individuals who fit that criteria and will inshAllah become the future leaders. The rest will be leaders & stars of the virtual world.
Lots of presence, but not much substance.
Where will all this self centered indulgence end? Nobody knows, but unless there is a dramatic change in how we are conditioning future generations to behave, it certainly will be a sad place to live in. It may be a place where people will either “like” you or “delete” you from of their real lives because you don’t see eye to eye on things- whether it’s the latest “scandal” gripping the community or the solution to creating world peace.
Where is the Love?
