Can we be true Australian Muslims if we are attached to a culture foreign to Australia? Do our ethnic cultures hinder or enhance our practice of Islam? The issue of Australian Muslim identity was explored during an entertaining and highly informative debate titled “As Muslims in Australia should we move on from our ethnic cultures?”. The debate was the first in a series called “ideb8” organised by the Islamic Sciences & Research Academy Australia (ISRA), the purpose of which is to provide a platform where information on contemporary issues relating to Islam and Muslims in Australia are relayed through positive debate and discussion in an entertaining and engaging format.
