Al-Ghazzali Centre presents its second SeekersCircle program of the year. This eight-week study of the treatise “Prohibitions of the Tongue (Maharam al-Lisan)” by the erudite Scholar Shaykh Muhammad Maulud explains Islam’s guidance on the dangers of the tongue and the rules related to it and how to achieve a level of excellence in our speech.
The Qur’an is clear- “On the Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet bear witness against them as to what they did.” The tongue causes more human suffering than even the sword, as the Arab poetry states, “Wars begin with words.” Shaykh Hamza Yusuf said, “More often than not, the sword has been drawn as a response to words…” Much of our trouble is due to the ignorance of the dangers of the tongue and the rules related to it. Islam has provided guidance of excellence for every aspect of our life and action, and speech is not neglected.
This Treatise, Prohibitions of the Tongue (Maharam al-Lisan), was authored by the erudite Scholar Shaykh Muhammad Maulud from the lands of as-Shinqitt, today known as Mauritania. He was from the tribe of Idy Ya’qub, who trace their roots back to Ja’far ibn Abi Talib, the first cousin of the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
