Israeli airstrike kills Palestinian policeman in Gaza

Israeli Defense Forces say the airstrike Tuesday targeted Haitham Mishal, a Gaza resident who they said was a member of the Islamist militant group Mujahideen Shura Council of Jerusalem.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been forced to withdraw Australia’s support for Israel in an upcoming United Nations vote after being opposed by the vast majority of her cabinet and warned she would be rolled by the caucus. As a result, Australia will abstain from a vote in the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution to give Palestine observer status in the UN, rather than join the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution as Ms Gillard had wanted.

Twelve members of the same family have been killed in an Israeli air strike on Gaza. Crowds shouted as a rescue worker pulled a small boy from the rubble after a two-storey house was flattened in one of the air strikes. He was one of four children killed, along with five women and an 80-year-old woman.
