So woe to the worshippers

Who are neglectful of their prayers,

Those who (want but) to be seen (of men),

But refuse (to supply) (even) neighbourly needs.

Price cleared at judiciary
15 September 2004

Bulldogs captain Steve Price has been cleared to play against Melbourne in Sunday's rugby league semi-final at Aussie Stadium after his grade one striking charge was dismissed at the NRL judiciary.

The inspirational Price, who will link up with the Warriors at the end of the season, had pleaded not guilty to striking North Queensland's Glenn Morrison in the Bulldogs 30-22 loss against the Cowboys on Saturday.

It was good news for the skipper who'd had a difficult match against the Queenslanders including receiving a stint in the sin bin for a professional foul on Cowboys pivot David Myles.

During his time off the field the Cowboys racked up a 10-0 lead.

Patten says 'Dogs will target Slater 15 September 2004

Luke Patten says the Bulldogs will target Melbourne fullback Billy Slater as a potential weak link in Sunday's NRL semi-final at Aussie Stadium.

For the second straight week in the finals, `Dogs No.1 Patten is preparing to line up against one of the most dangerous attacking players in the NRL.

Last weekend it was electrifying North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen, this Sunday it will be Slater.

Patten said the Bulldogs deliberately avoided directing down-field kicks to Bowen but no such plan had been hatched for Slater.

"Against Melbourne I can't see any reason why we wouldn't kick to him (Slater)," said the 24-year-old Patten.

"Even last year when we played him in the semi he came up with a few errors so maybe that's something we can look at again.

"He's only a little fella so if you get hold of him, you can do a bit of damage to him."

The Bulldogs thrashed the Storm 30-0 in that 2003 semi-final but Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy says he's since learnt how to better prepare for finals football.

The Storm had lost nine straight games to the `Dogs before they produced a morale-boosting 25-18 win over the premiership heavyweights in round 24.

Considering it was a wet day in Melbourne and several Storm players were turning out for their final home match, Patten isn't reading too much into the result.

"They got us in Melbourne when it was their last home game and they were seeing some blokes off," said Patten.

"It was a wet day but you don't want to make excuses. They played really well that day and they'll come up and play really well again.

"But we've got to be confident, because what we've done all year has got us to second spot.

"Even the loss against Melbourne ... it sucks losing and we don't like losing but maybe it did us a favour.

"Hopefully the loss against the Cowboys was a similar sort of thing. It was a good kick up the butt and you come to training a bit more switched on."

Patten said the Bulldogs need to tighten their defence around the ruck and slow down the Storm's play-the-ball on Sunday.

It was North Queensland's little men - Matt Sing, Aaron Payne and Bowen - who hurt the Bulldogs in its 30-22 upset win in last week's qualifying final and Patten is wary of Slater's potential to break the line.

"If we put a kick in or he's supporting on the inside, you've got to expect him to make a break and you've just got to be there," said Patten.

The Country Origin fullback agrees with coach Steve Folkes that the `Dogs could benefit from playing on Sunday to keep their momentum going rather than having the week's rest had they beaten the Cowboys.

"It would've been nice to have a week off but we do get another chance," he noted.

"The only bad thing I can see is hopefully we don't get any injuries."

With five-eighth Braith Anasta likely to be ruled out of the game with a sternum injury, Folkes will no doubt be thinking along the same lines.

The Panthers are awaiting the winner of Sunday's match in the first preliminary final at Aussie Stadium on September 25.
