Hello Mohamad,

Thank you for your question about emulsifier 471. I hope you find the following information useful.

This emulsifier can be derived from both animal and plant origins. For commercial purposes most companies (but not all) will most likely choose the plant version due to its lower cost.

Sanitarium is a vegetarian food company and therefore only utilises the plant version of 471 which is derived from palm oil. We add this emulsifier to some of our products to ensure the product has an even consistency.

I hope that this information is of help to you. You may also wish to visit our website www.sanitarium.co.nz, where you can join the Good Food News email mailing list. Good Food News is a free quarterly publication which you can receive via email. It includes tasty recipes, current nutrition and health issues, as well as product information.

With kind regards,

Yeah Sanitarium was actually started by the 7th Day Adventist Church, who are vegetarians, so most of their products are good to use.

Note that TipTop bread also has Halal certification.

SAWAWB

Yeah I like the Sanitarium products.

Please also be aware that ALL emulsifiers regardless of number can be animal derived. Call the companies if it's not clarified in the ingredients. Thank you for calling, come again....

Assalamoalaikum MVF,
just a couple of follow ups from this company..

: RE: Consumer Inquiry from Aust

Dear Mohammed,

Thankyou for your further inquiry, Paige has now directed you to Sanitarium
Australia. I am double checking with our technical department on the status of
the alcohol content of our products for you and will reply as soon as I receive
confirmation from them.

As Sanitarium supports a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, all of our products are
suitable for people following this diet. Therefore we do not use gelatine or
source ingredients from animal origin in our products.

We are more than happy for you to put a statement to this effect on your website
so that other people in the Muslim community are aware of this.

Yours Sincerely

Dear Paige,

Thankyou very much for your reply, Its really helpfull. And now not only i
but the rest of the Muslim community can rest assured that Sanitarium's
products are 100% ok atleast in this regard.
The other issues, if i can bother you with are gelatine and if any
alcohol, rum or any liquids of that sort are used in any of your products. As
these issues are really critical to Muslims when choosing products, i really
appreciate your help in informing me.

Also a Couple of questions, 1- AS this email is coming from New Zealand, do
you speak on behalf of both Australia and NZ, as i am in Australia?

2- As you have stated its confidential, can i post this message on the
following website for educational, dietary and/or religious purposes?
http://www.islamicsydney.com

Thanks for your valuable help again,

Mohammad N.

I would also speak to the Hajj about whether to place this list on your website

Dont quote me, but im pretty sure that it is a ham like product in terms of look and taste but is suitable to be eaten by vegetarian ie, no animal derviatives, like soy ham or chicken, fake meat for those who dont eat it.

Intresting..

Why would one want to eat fake meat if they don't want to eat meat..

Yeah I was thinking alone the same lines as your Br Nur.

I have no idea, maybe because they like the taste of meat or is versatile nature but have other convictions which prevent them from eating it.

(I'm a sister by the way, that is like the third time this week, I hope that doesn't ever happen in real life  )
