Happy New Year for tomorrow evening, all!

And tonight at Peace Park, we observed McNaught Comet! yay.gif Almost as spectacular as sighting a crescent!! eusa_dance.gif very nice surprise after the setting of the crescent and non-observation.

Wasalaam

Assalaamu'Alaikum,

Rabbi ul-Awwal information attached. I would also like to highlight a paragraph from the document:

QUOTE
Therefore, subject to actual (non)sighting of the crescent, the 1st day of Rabbi ul-Awwal 1428 should most likely be on Wednesday 21st March, 2007.

You will note (as stated above) that although the new moon conjunction will have occurred on 19th March, the moon on this day will in fact set at 19:05 before the sunset at 19:11. You will note that many calendars have claimed 20th March to be the 1st day for this month based on “scientific” calculation, when in fact scientific calculation expressly contradicts the published calendars. We yet again advise Muslims to avoid relying on calendars for the lunar dates.

Wassalaam

Don't mean to digress, but thought this was funny.

"the saudi's couldn't sight the new moon unless there was oil spurting out of it".

Someone told me that was from television series on Muslims?

Anyway...funny.

The crescent was sighted on Sunday, therefore the 1st of Rajab 1428 was on Monday the 16th of July 2007.

I dunno why they don't update it on here, but you can visit here if/when you wanna check (these are a bit late at times too)

Waiting for WA sighting, so far no moon sighted in any of the other centres in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Alice Springs, and Adelaide).

NZ never saw the moon and will be starting Ramadhan on Friday, according to my sources (Sir Zubair icon_razz.gif).

Since Australia and New Zealand are to the far east of most of those countries it makes sense that they would start Ramadhan before us, once you understand the way which the lunar cycle works. The older the moon gets, the easier it becomes to see the more west you travel. Or to put it another way, America will start Thursday which is our Friday, so in effect, we are starting the same day as America, even though the dates are different (as is the case for everything else).

So we end up with three starts again! I heard that some people fasted today here in Sydney on the basis of some sort of calculation (most probably of the birth of moon). Khayr insha'Allah...

Anyhow, I'll be starting tommorrow, as globally yesterday was the 29th of Sha'ban and the hilal was not sighted anywhere.
