the MCCA 2003 first ever Australian Muslim of the Year award, went to Susan Carland, from Melbourne.
I think that it is cool bananas!
What are people's thoughts, if you have any?

i think her ultra-cute baby daughter deserves the title of 'baby hairstyle of the year'.
but seriously, for someone who has the hefty responsibilities of being a wife and (now) mother, i think it is a good choice. by the way, how did they decide? do they take nominations? who are the judges? what is the prize?
the good thing about this award is that it shows what values muslims have. these are values muslims hold dear. she has the following characteristics:
1. she is an anglo-aussie (actually a kiwi);
2. she is a woman;
3. she is a mother;
4. she is a (twice) graduate from a university;
5. she is a trainer in dawah programs;
6. her daughter has amazing hair which truly defies gravity.
so good choice. i wonder if andrew bolthead or piersed akumen will have anything to say about the award.

Her husband, is Waleed Aly, an upcoming bright solicitor, and is also on the executive board of the Islamic Council of Victoria.
Susan has been interviewed on the TV a few times as well, and is a most courteous and down to earth sepaker.
I hope that helps.

Actually there was another event for other categories for Australian Muslim Organisation of the year, Australian Muslim Students Society of the year, and another few categories. Anyone from Melbourne know what happened to that, or the results?
All were organised from Melbourne, all were hosted in Melbourne, so are they going to remain Melbournian.
Yes, we Sydney-siders cant hack that seeing NSW has 50% of Australian total Muslim population in Aust. 8) Atleast we have the Sydney to Hobart, which passes Melbourne

as we have not one but THREE peak muslim bodies representing us in new south wales, perhaps we could have 3 awards for the best muslim new south welshman (or woman).
but what would they get as a prize? perhaps a pizza hut voucher ...
alternately, they could face the music ...

Hazem voluntarily devotes much time to the general Lebanese-Australian community and Muslim community too. in the ups and downs since sept 11 and bali and gang-rapes , and everything else, he has tried to promote a good image.

“He’s always out there as much as he can, speaking at and going to whatever he can to help the community. Who else do you know who does that?”
“I think he’s a real good role model.”
“They had this article once about him and how he prays before the game and he fasts during the games and stuff and they showed a picture of him reading the Qur’an and that was good. When he first started playing, his team mates called him ‘Allah’ but he asked them politely to not call him that.”
“I think he has been the best Muslim role model in Australia, particularly for Arab Muslims. I really do.”

if we asked, what is the favourite dish of the year, the only response we would get is either curry vs falafel.
i would have assumed that this thread would give you all a chance to inform all of us of who would be a contender?
opinions anyone?
there are also silent and quiet achievers in our community who do good.
ie br. Mohammed Abu Shabaan
br. Zakariayya Matthews
sr Sally Moussa (recently elected as the President of MWA)
Sr Salma Ihram
Afroz
sh shady (dont all jump on me now!!! as i vote that on him as an individual and his indvidual efforts -he gets guys off the streets/drugs/crime and pubs and into the mosque)
like, i am sure there are other Muslims of different cultures who contribute to the Australian society?
i would like to know them..................................and also from melbourne, i already know Sr Susan Carland who won the prize. But i for one am interested in knowing what the other contededers had to offer too.
Why?
Because our community need Motivators to uplift our spirits! it is good to know who they all are.

I would have to agree with you on Hazem, he has been a great role model and a strong personality to represent all muslims.

Another deserving person, no one should jump at you Sis, i think he's done some great things , especially for the youth. All these youth centres, and everybody who helps keep these places running should be rewarded, whether its the UMA, GIYC and any other centre. They've brought alot of youth of the streets, and inside of Islam. No one can dispute that. Before someone think about criticising these places, we've really got to think.. ok what have I done.. and who have i helped?
There's so many more peoples, im not going to start on Hanan again, but there are numeorus ppls here who can really be up for it, like you and br Afroz etc etc..

It was the FAIR newspaper that had an article on the winner of the MCCA one. I suppose the other winners of the various categories will remain to be known to melbourne only even though they were supposed to be a national event. Also, they had a function and all the host this event for the winners, so someone must have heard something
shyness, do u anything about it down there in melbourne?
and La Dee, i will leave u alone this time.....i will come in those haunting dreams at night...muwahhahahaha :wink: [j/k]
Peace
