These are photos from the SIEV X memorial last week. SIEV X was the name given to the refugee boat sailing from Indonesia to Australia which sank about five years ago and over 300 people, many of the them children, died. Most of these people, if not all were Muslims from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Each pole, representing a victim, was painted and decorated by school children throughout Australia. This memorial was to have been erected for three weeks but in the last minute the National Capital Authority (run by the Federal Government) withdrew their permission. The SIEV X committee are still lobbying for a permanent memorial.

Thousands of people had attended. These people shared nothing in common with those who died but attended to show that deaths of these refugees. It was a wonderful show of compassion and concern and shows that there are plenty of people

Thanks for putting these up sis.

The driving force behind the largely one-man crusade to get answers on what happened with SIEV-X (Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel X - X for unknown) is Tony Kevin, who has published a book on his investigations entitled 'A Certain Maritime Incident' (book review here) - the same name of the Senate inquiry into the sinking of the boat.

I'm currently reading it and would recommend it to everyone. You would be astounded to know how very few people are aware of what happened, much less are willing to entertain the notion that an Australian government could be responsible for acts of sabotage and failure to render assistance to drowning people. So read the book and make sure others know about it too. It shouldn't just be up to Tony Kevin et al and the poles memorial to keep SIEV-X from becoming an obscure historical blip on Australia's radar.
