Asalamu alaikum :D

I know it's abit early, but I guess I'm curious and want to know. Ok I know basically next to nothing about taraweeh prayer. All I know is people go to the mosque for isha prayer then after isha prayer taraweeh starts, 2 rikat prayers 4 times and then 3 rikat witr prayer. ok I've been told you can pray more but this is what the lakemba people do afaik.
Now my question, questions rather. Why do we do taraweeh prayer? sounds like a silly question.. but I've never actually heard of the Prophet (pbuh) praying taraweeh   thats why I asked? is it adviced? according to who? how is taraweeh prayed? any way you like? according to your mosque or how?

Well thanks for hearing my out :D

Walaikumu salaam,

They do 20 rakats in Auburn... it's like a workout session!
I've heard in the Mid East they all pray 20. But some people here are lazy so they pray 8. Don't know if it's true. Never looked into it.

I quite enjoy prayer tarraweeh. It's a good feeling :)

That is a gross exageration. Since I don't have the luxury to go to other mosques,
I pray tarawih at ICV, there they pray 8 rakat. I pray an extra 12 after Witr when
I go home. But those 8 rakats take at least 45min going up to an hour or even more.
When I compare that to some Turkish mosques I've prayed in (both in Australia and
Turkey), where they pray 20 rakat, to me it seems the latter one is more lazy. The
reason being 20 rakat takes about 20 - 30 min. Thats usually because they don't aim
for Hatm al-Qur'an in the places I prayed, where as in ICV they do.

It would have been nice to find a place close enough to my house that has the benefit
of both, i.e. 20 rakat + Hatm of Qur'an.

Wassalam...

The taraweeh is a sunnah of the Messenger of Allah :saws:. He first initiated it as a congregational prayer held in the mosque. However, at this time the revelation was still descending and the Messenger :saws: out of his mercy for the believers feared that Allah may make the taraweeh fard and this may subsequently become too hard on the believers, so after three nights he instructing the companions to pray the taraweeh on their own and not in congregation. It then stayed like this till the time of Umar (ra) who, condsidering that the fear of the Messenger :saws: (of the taraweeh becoming fard) was no longer a possibility (as the revelation had ceased and the deen was complete), instructed the people to again congregate for the taraweeh. He set the rak'at at 20 and put Ubayy ibn Ka'b to lead. The Ummah till now has followed the example set by Umar, which essentially is the Sunnah of the Messenger :saws:.
"On the Day of Judgment there will be a flag for every person guilty of treachery. It will be raised in proportion to the extent of his guilt; and there is no guilt of treachery more serious than the one committed by the ruler of men" [Muslim]

assalma alykom wa rahmet allah wa barakatoh :)

hmm i just saw this question now  hmm strange..inshallah khier anyway i will try answering your questions inshallah :) :

(1)Why do we do taraweeh prayer?

Abd Al-rahman Bin Awf narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: Allah, the Exalted, made fasting the month of ramad complusary on you and it's Qiyam ( night prayers) is from my sunnah, So who fasts and have the Qiyyam lail done in this month for Allah sake and asking Allah's reward for that, he will be free of sin like the day he was born"..........Musnad Ahmad

So as you can see it's a sunnah and a big rewarded sunnah inshallah, that's why we pray it alhamdullah :)

(2) is it adviced? according to who?

Aisha (r.a) narrated that The Prophet (PBUH) prayed it the first time and then people started to pray behind them then more people started joining and they did that for 3 days. in the fourth day they waited and the Prophet (PBUH) didn't come out and in the morning he came out and told them" I didn't come out yesterday because i feared that it becomes obligatory on you".....sahih muslim

{أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى في المسجد فصلى بصلاته ناس ثم صلى من القابلة فكثر الناس ثم اجتمعوا من الليلة الثالثة فلم يخرج إليهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلما أصبح قال قد رأيت الذي صنعتم فلم يمنعني من الخروج إليكم إلا أني خشيت أن تفرض عليكم وذلك في رمضان}

so here as we can see it was prayed on jamaa and the Prophet (PBUH) didn't forbid people to do so, he just feared on them that Taraweeh to become fard! and at Omar Bin alkhattab time when he gathered everyone to pray it as jama'a and he made Obai Bin Ka'ab the Imam there were alot of Sahaba and noone disagreed on that, besides the Prophet (PBUH) told us to follow his sunnah and the sunnah of the guided caliphs after him :)

(3) how is taraweeh prayed? any way you like? according to your mosque or how?

Taraweeh Prayer is prayed as "shaf3" like Two rakaa each time..hmm i am not sure if i could understand what you meant of your question when you say according to your masjid! cause it's prayed in one way there is no other way! and allah knows!

Regrading the Numbers of rakkaa in the Taraweeh, it never stated asa Sahih Or Hsaan hadith how many Rakaa the Prophet (PBUH) used to pray in the Taraweeh, however there are many different opinions on that matter.

(I) The majority of scholars from hanafi, hanbali, shafii and some malaiki agreed that it's 20 rakaa for what was narrtaed that at omar bin alkhattab time he gathered the people on 20 rakaa, exculding the Witr and the compannions witnessed that and didn't disagree on that or denied it :)

(II) Some other scholars said its allowed to be 36 rakaa excluding the Witr

(III) Some said it's 13 rakaa including the witr prayer.

Anyway the scholars stated that it's better to suit it according to the circumstances of the people who prayed so if they can stand long time it's better to do it 20 since its the most common and if they can't they pray it 13and both is right and you can make it more than that :)

and allah knows :)

Taraweeh prayer is a Sunnah - While the unity of Ummah is a Fard. Therefore, it's a fitna to fight over its numbers of rikah.

Interesting, we have been praying 11 raka's over at Omar mosque, including witr. And i assumed that was the avarage. now i am hearing 20 and 13 raka's. May be coz of the families including kids and grandparents that come there they make it shorter, or maybe we are just plain lazy up here ;) :D :P

Cant wait to pray Taraweeh with the brothers this year.

Make sure you dont eat onions or garlic and then go to the mosque like some brothers do, it puts one off and you lose concentratio
