Fear of being criminalised has forced Muslims into silence

I have lost count of the number of Muslim students, activists and imams who have told me of their fear of being labelled as extremists or terrorists if they dare take an unconventional, unorthodox or radical position on a political or religious issue. There is a growing belief that dissent by politically active Muslims has not just been stigmatised, but criminalised.

But the most disturbing aspect comes in the form of the alienation of the Muslim community, at least in part, from mainstream Australian society. Only time will tell how this might play out.

911 – a ten year reckoning

This weekend will mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the day that changed the world forever. It started a war that once begun could only grow larger as the perceived threat of terrorism grew from a lucky and opportunistic blow against the United States into something much larger, resulting in an international crusade to crush dissent and remake governments in a considerable part of the globe. At this point, the war continues with no end in sight.
