ISRA: Are Public Schools better than Islamic Schools?

Our community is divided over the issue of Islamic schools. Some are passionately for them yet others are strongly against them. Where do YOU stand? Should we send our kids to Islamic schools or to Public schools? Where would they be “safer”? It’s time to debate. It’s time to DECIDE. or or 02 9649 9040

Muslim community is a part and parcel of the British society paying taxes like any other law-abiding citizen of the United Kingdom. According to the Education Act of 1944, the children should be educated according to the needs and demands of the parents. It is the parents who are going to decide what kind of education their children will receive. The Muslim community was not satisfied, therefore, they decided to set up Muslim schools and not faith based schools. The number of Muslim children is on the increase due to high birth rate, immigration and conversion. We do not have the resources to set up schools for each and every child. Now the only alternative is that those schools where the Muslim pupils are in majority should be managed and controlled by Muslim Educational Trusts and Charities just like private companies managing failing state schools in Islington and Surrey. This demand is in accordance with the law of the land and nothing to do with Islam. There is no shortage of state schools where Muslim pupils are in majority one can easily find them in all big cities inner areas.

The Muslim schools will follow National Curriculum along with Islamic studies and Islamic History based on The Holly Quran and Sunnah. There is no place for Comparative Religion and European Languages. English will be the medium of instruction because it is an economic and social language for communication in the global village. Special attention will be given to its teaching right from Nursery level by qualified British educated teachers, but Arabic, Urdu and Islamic studies will be taught by qualified Muslim teachers from abroad. Arabic and Urdu will be taught as religious, social and emotional languages, so that the Muslim children do not find themselves cut off from their roots. It will help them to develop Islamic Identity crucial for mental, emotional and personality development. The multicultural policy of the LEAs could not improve race relation and the recent riots are the clear examples of its failure.

The minority communities in Muslim countries are not outsiders, they were there before the rise of Islam. They are still surviving with their institutions. In Pakistan the best schools are in the hands of missionaries established during the time of British Imperialism.Majority of fees paying students is Muslims. They are taught Urdu, Arabic and Islamic studies along with National Curriculum. In U.K the situation is different, we need Muslim schools for the preservation and tansmittion of Islamic culture and languages along with mastery of English language and National Curriculum.

Teacher is a role model for the children. In the 60s, hundred of Muslim teachers from Pakistan were employed in the rough inner cities schools. Majority of them was successful in teaching and handling white and black students. Now the teacher shortage is in those schools where Muslim children are in majority. The LEAs recruited teachers from South Africa instead of Pakistan to teach Muslim children. Muslim teachers should be employed and South African teachers should be used in all white schools to see how long they could survive. Muslim teachers were succeeded in the past and now they are fit to teach Muslim children as role models. The young generation of Muslims is reluctant to join teaching profession because of various reasons, now the only alternative is to recruit Muslim qualified teachers from Islamic countries to educate Muslim children .We have already lost four generations and the fifth one is in the process of losing its Islamic Identity. This is the main reason why Muslim community wants their children to be in Muslim schools to be educated and supervised by Muslim Teachers

One of the greatest British philosophers Sir Bernard Shaw once said that the future religion of the West would be Islam. The reversion rate in Europe and America clearly indicates that his prediction is cent percent true. The new reverts to Islam are reluctant to send their children to secular or faith based schools. Mr.Yousuf Islam formally Cat Steven Started a Muslim school so that his children could attend. The state schools have been mis-educating and de-educating Muslim children for the last 50 years. Majority of them leaves schools with low grades and unemployment is on the increase. Drug addiction, problems of run away girls and under age pregnancy is the fruits of the British education system.

The Muslim community has been passing through a phase of fourth Crusades. The battleground is the field of education, where the young generation will be educated properly with the Holly Quran in one hand and Sciences in other hand to serve the British society and the world at large. A true Muslim is a citizen of the world, which has become a small global village. We are going to prepare our youth to achieve that objective in the long run. A true Muslim believes in Prophet Moses and the Prophet Jesus and without them one cannot be a Muslim. My suggestion is that in all state, independent and Christian based school special attention should be given to the teaching of Comparative Religion and Islam should be taught by qualified Muslim Teachers to make the children aware the closeness of Islam to Christianity and Judaism which will help them to think about Islam, as “A Pragmatic and Modern Way of Life,” during their life time.
